The Country Fire Service (CFS) have issued an update on the ongoing scrub fire in Wilmington, warning that the blaze remains uncontained and could continue burning for days.
Whilst there is still currently no threat to local communities, anyone in Wilmington, Melrose, Nectar Brook, and Mambray Creek is strongly encouraged to stay informed through multiple channels as the situation is continually changing.
Currently, 79 firefighters from the CFS and the Department for Environment and Water are tirelessly battling the fire at Alligator Gorge. The teams are backed by a substantial logistical network consisting of approximately 23 trucks, 30 Farm Fire Units, numerous heavy machinery pieces, and 6 aircraft that include firebombers and observational planes.
As part of the firefighting efforts, aircraft have been actively dispersing fire retardant around critical areas to prevent the fire from breaching control lines. Additional aerial support has also been commissioned to continually monitor the situation from above.
The challenging terrain of the Mount Remarkable National Park adds a layer of complexity to the firefighting efforts. Its steep grounds offer limited safe passage, restricting direct access for on-ground teams. This limitation has left the fire uncontained which, according to officials, could persist throughout the week or longer. This unrelenting fire has now consumed around 3850 hectares, predominantly within the national park, though some northern areas have seen breaches.
Despite these challenges, officials have also commented on strategic actions to mitigate the fire’s impact, including implementing controlled burns during favourable weather conditions. These burns are essential to managing the spread but will result in increased visibility of smoke and potentially embers, particularly noticeable during the nighttime hours.
Authorities stress that while there currently is no immediate threat to local communities, the situation is dynamic and subject to change. Residents in the affected areas are urged to remain vigilant and stay informed.
The Mount Remarkable National Park has been closed to the public indefinitely to ensure safety and unhampered access for emergency services. Motorists are advised to avoid the area as emergency operations may impact the local roadways. Where travel is necessary, drivers are reminded to exercise caution and adapt their driving to the evolving road conditions, especially in smoke-covered areas.
Public health officials also caution that smoke may affect air quality in surrounding areas over the next few days. Residents should take appropriate measures to protect their health and follow guidelines when driving in smoke-laden areas.
