Iconic Adelaide Hills based producers Beerenberg and multiple award-winning craft brewery Prancing Pony Brewery have teamed up to create a ‘Berliner Weisse’- and, an exclusive syrup to go with it.
They have collaborated to revive and reimagine the historic tart wheat beer, which has with its origins in 16th century Berlin. The beer’s tartness was traditionally balanced with a splash of fruit syrup. This summer refresher was popularised as the ‘Berliner Weisse’ and was enjoyed in traditional goblets in Berlin- and, you drink it with a straw.
The exciting collaboration offers a package of nine cans of Berliner Weisse alongside an exclusive Beerenberg strawberry syrup, specially crafted for this collaboration.
You can experiment with the balance of tartness to your liking, reminiscent of how the Berliners relished the drink. There’s also a cheeky suggestion to try the syrup over vanilla ice cream.
The Prancing Pony Brewery and Beerenberg are located a mere stone’s throw from each other on the outskirts of Hahndorf.
Prancing Pony CEO and co-founder Corinna Steeb says Prancing Pony Brewery and Beerenberg share many similarities. Although their products are completely different, they share the same philosophy, respect for tradition, attention to detail, product quality and customer service attitude.
But also, and it might even be considered the most important, both Corinna and Beerenberg marketing director and 5th generation successor of the Beerenberg family Sally Paech both like beer.
“Even though our products are completely different, Beerenberg is one of the companies with a very similar outlook on being a family-owned independent business, looking after their employees and the brand. We have the same philosophies, and when two companies share so many philosophical elements with running their business, it makes sense to collaborate,” Corinna says.
“We knew if we did something with Beerenberg we’d be pulling on the exact same string and we would be on one wavelength with trying to achieve a really good outcome for the product.”
Corinna says the authenticity and tradition of the two businesses was also a special part of the collaboration.
“We stick very much to the German brewing principles, Beerenberg they come from Germany, we come from Germany, and the fun part about it is the Beerenberg family comes from Berlin, so the family would’ve been very familiar with the Berliner Weisse,” she says.
“My family comes from the South West and they were all market gardeners, so they would’ve picked strawberries. Although we embrace modern technology in our processing we learn and take notes from our ancestors and what was tasted 100 years ago is now totally refined.”
In celebration of this blend of history and innovation, a formal Berliner Weisse launch party will be held on Friday 18th November 2023 at the Prancing Pony Brewery, starting at 6pm. Bookings essential.
Berliner Weisse will be sold at the Prancing Pony Brewery brewshed and online store, selective liquor outlets and the Beerenberg restaurant.
