Over $100,000 in rare wines sold at Sydney auction raising funds for local Barossa charity

Over $100,000 was bid on exclusive wines at the Barossa Live Auction in Sydney, with proceeds supporting the Barossa Australia Well-Being Fund.

Last week, wine connoisseurs and enthusiasts came together at the Crown Sydney for the 10th anniversary of the Barossa Live Auction, raising funds for The Barossa Australia Well-Being Fund. Hosted by Langtons, a premier fine wine destination, the event celebrated a remarkable milestone by auctioning over $100,000 worth of premium wines, with the total reaching $109,020 (excluding buyer’s premium). This bi-annual gathering saw a huge turnout of more than 200 bidders.

Exceptional lots, including rare collector imperial- and magnum-sized bottles, and celebrated vintages from renowned Barossa producers such as Penfolds, Henschke, Rockford, and Sami-Odi were featured. Unique to this auction, vinous experiences at local cellar doors like Seppeltsfield, Rieslingfreak, and Yalumba were also up for bidding.

The auction’s highlight was undoubtedly the Sami-Odi Hoffmann Dallwitz Syrah full vertical from 2007 to 2023. Starting with an estimate of $3000 ot $3500, passionate bidding drove its final sale to an impressive $10,500. A Langton’s Classification VIII Edition Rockfords magnum set reached $4300, surpassing its expected $1300 to $1500.

Other remarkable sales included the Henschke Hill of Grace Single Vineyard Shiraz 2018 imperial, which fetched $17,500, a Rockford Basket Press Shiraz imperial in a bespoke wooden display case that sold for $7500, and three Penfolds RWT Bin 798 magnums that reached $4750.

Michael Anderson, Head of Auctions and Wine Consignment at Langtons, shared, “The Barossa Auction is one of the highlights on the Langtons calendar, affording guests and bidders unrivalled access to the rarest collections, verticals and large format cuvées from the region’s most talked about producers. The majority of these lots are purely created for this sole auction and as we saw last night, reach astonishing prices.”

The Barossa Live Auction also served a philanthropic purpose, with a portion of the proceeds destined for The Barossa Australia Well-Being Fund by Foundation Barossa. This initiative supports the mental well-being of local industry workers by connecting them to essential health support services.

“The thrill of a live auction is like no other, and last night was no exception. The atmosphere was electric with keen bidders able to raise a paddle and get their hands on some unicorn wines while raising funds for a fantastic cause, The Barossa Australia Well-Being Fund, which helps connect local industry workers to mental health support.”

The event was hosted in the opulent settings of the Pearl Ballroom at Crown Sydney. Guests enjoyed a three-course dinner paired with select Barossa wines from Penfolds, Krondorf, and Nanny Goat, elevating the bidding experience.

“The Barossa Live Auction is an event we always look forward to—the atmosphere of a live auction sitting alongside winemakers and bidding for rare and hard-to-find wines from winery cellars is a memorable experience,” says Tamara Grischy, General Manager at Langtons.

“We are so proud here at Langtons to mark a decade of hosting the Barossa Live Auction and sharing the prestige of this acclaimed region with keen collectors while raising money for a very important cause.”

Looking back, the Barossa Live Auction has evolved significantly since its inception in 1965 as part of the Barossa Vintage Festival. In partnership with Langtons since 2015, this event has successfully transitioned to include a Sydney edition, expanding its reach and impact.

The thrill and success of this year’s auction, with an exceptional array of wines and experiences offered, not only celebrates a decade of auctions hosted by Langtons but also solidifies the event’s status as an essential fixture in the global wine auction calendar.
