OzAsia Festival Review: What The Day Owes To The Night

In its Australian premiere What The Day Owes To The Night is a breathtaking display of talent in a way that makes you feel mesmerized by its beauty but also taken aback by the sheer powerfulness of the performance.

Choreographer Hervé Koubi welcomes the audience with his charismatic retelling of how he came to know his ancestry. Koubi even brings an element of comedy to the story that has you waiting to see how this will be portrayed through dance. In its Australian premiere What The Day Owes To The Night is a breathtaking display of talent in a way that makes you feel mesmerized by its beauty but also taken aback by the sheer powerfulness of the performance.

One would imagine a performance like this would consist of dancers who had been highly trained in a prestigious dance school. But it is even more beautiful when you find out that, in fact, the group mostly consists of street dancers from across the Mediterranean Basin who are self-taught.

The group is truly multi-cultural featuring dancers from Algeria, Morocco, France, Italy and Israel.

A remarkable performance that captures the quest for connection that people seek; of knowing where you came from and exploring your ancestral roots. Spiralling, acrobatics, hip hop and contemporary dance never looked so good and the rest of the audience must have agreed if the standing ovation and thunderous applause were anything to go by.
