A one-night only celebration of music, dance, food and culture from the Philippines, covering both tradition and modern entertainment.

Bringing local and Northern Territory Filipino artists together for the Adelaide premier of DJ Kuya James’ Pinoy Street Party proved to be a real celebration of culture and music despite the current COVID-19 related restrictions against dancing.

The courtyard of the Lion Arts Centre was converted to a celebratory space with a stage, and street food provided by The Filipino Project. The Nexus Arts venue provided bar facilities and a warm chillout space.

Performances ranged from traditional Filipino dancers to modern music and song, each engaging and pleasing to the eyes and ears. Producer and DJ Kuya James must be congratulated for securing such a broad range of talent that comprised Emcille Wills, Serina Pech, and Iselle Grosskopf (PHLtheBeat) from the Northern Territory, and Brian Ruiz, Ben-Hur Winter, Kissey Gulle, Clai Pasion, James Sace, Becky Blake, Jennifer Trijo, Thina, Nicole Vergara, Kent Klakhaeng, Aksel Lor Encho, Miggy Hutton and Dangerous Trio from South Australia.

While there was no dancing allowed in the crowd, the talent had many jigging on the spot and lapping up the entertainment despite the dropping temperature as the night progressed.

In better times, the Pinoy Street Party would be a dance sensation for all in attendance instead of the concert it was forced to be, but it succeeded admirably with ample social media posts from happy punters proclaiming its success. The variety of music styles on show was a superb introduction to old and new music of the Philippines.

Here’s hoping Kuya James brings his party back to our fair city for many more outings to come.
