Adelaide funk outfit The Shaolin Afronauts, opened to an appreciative audience on Saturday night at Nexus Arts. Nearly 200 people jammed into the venue, standing, sitting and lounging on bean-bags, until the boys got them all up on their feet and grooving to their distinct, brassy, sound. Playing for half an hour, they got the place warmed up for the main act, Melbourne’s cult group The Bombay Royale.

Formed in 2010, Bombay is led by Andy Williamson (“The Captain”) on sax. Lead vocals are delivered by Parvyn Kaur Singh (“Mysterious Lady”) and Shourov Bhattacharya (“The Tiger”).

The group performs music inspired by old Bollywood movies, infused with funk, disco and psychedelic surf: somewhat like a Hindi version of the B-52s. Their music has featured in soundtracks, and they have performed around the world, including at Glastonbury. As well as a strong brass section, the group has traditional instruments such as the sitar, played by Josh Bennett.

Although the emphasis is on fun, this is a group that is grounded in tight instrumentals and pitch-perfect vocals. Singh, as a Bollywood dance teacher, was able to give the audience some dance tips, which they happily followed, adding to the already warm feeling in the venue.

OzAsia is a superbly curated festival. However, it would be great to see the program contain more contemporary/rock/pop music, such as Bombay Royale., both because it is an important part of any culture, and because it will help attract a broader audience. Last night’s cohort was testament to that.

When The Bombay Royale next play in Adelaide, rush out and catch them. They’re a unique and joyful experience.
