St John Ambulance SA is encouraging everyone who attends Adelaide’s Big Day Out to party safely, have a good time and, and keep a close eye on their friends. Of the 200 patients treated at last year’s event the greater majority sort assistance by St John Ambulance for alcohol affected illness.
St John Ambulance Health Advisor, Susan Loechel, urges all patrons to not be shy in seeking out a St John volunteer if they have any health concerns.
“The St John treatment centre will be located at the Atrium within the Royal Adelaide Showgrounds. Thirty-five St John Volunteers including foot patrols will be on site to provide first aid support and patient care.” She said.
“Caffeinated high energy drinks mixed with alcohol and other stimulants can cause severe side effects. They can boost the heart rate, causing heart palpitations, and in extreme circumstances even a heart attack.”
“People must keep in mind that caffeinated high energy drinks, along with alcohol, and also soft drink are high in sugar and can cause dehydration, so it’s crucial to drink plenty of water.” Susan said.
“St John recommends drinking around 600mL of water every hour to stay hydrated, even if the day isn’t particularly hot.”
More than 20,000 people attended the Big Day Out in 2012, and this year’s event is expected to be even larger. The music festival falls on the same day as the Tour Down Under’s BUPA Challenge, which St John also has a strong presence at.
“If issues do crop up, we are prepared to re-deploy St John Volunteers to the most appropriate location. We are there to provide support for all South Australians, so if people are feeling unwell or are concerned about a friend, come and ask for help.” Susan said.
