Adelaide culinary icons Parwana Kitchen are hosting a fundraising dinner in order to provide emergency relief to displaced civilians trapped amidst the unfolding tragedy in Afghanistan.
The popular venue has been feeding Adelaideans traditional Afghan dishes since its opening in 2009, headed up by Durkhanai Ayubi, who came to Australia with her family from Afghanistan in 1987.
The dinner will take place on Monday 6 September and is expected to take place at Plant 4, Bowden, where mother and daughter duo of the Parwana empire, Fatema and Zainab have been regular stallholders since 2016, although final details of the fundraiser’s venue have not yet been confirmed.
In a statement released today, the family said: “Although thousands of kilometres away in Australia, we cannot claim to know the fullness of the fears facing those within Afghanistan, and although our words are inadequate to capture their loss, we are determined to stand in solidarity in whatever ways available to us.”
The dinner will feature Parwana’s mouth-watering cuisine, live Afghan music, an auction of traditional Afghan goods, and speeches from those working within and for Afghanistan.
Minimal funds will go towards the set up of the venue and to cover basic produce related expenses but all other funds raised through ticket sales, donations and proceeds will go towards the Afghan-Australian Development Organisation, to purchase emergency relief items for the internally displaced, including medicine, food, clothing, blankets and to provide the necessary support as the situation evolves.
Bookings for the dinner are now open, with an outpouring of support expected for the venue who has been bringing a delicious taste of Afghan flavours to Adelaide for over a decade.
