Pastry haven Abbots and Kinney pops up at Marino Rocks

Popular bakery Abbots and Kinney have revealed they’re popping up in Marino Rocks, providing their mouth-watering coffee, sweet treats, and toasties to another part of Adelaide.

It’s the next step for the cafĂ© that’s all about community.

You see, when the Marino Rocks Cafe came up for sale a couple of years ago, a group of locals decided to purchase it together, creating a community co-op space and saving it from the inevitable demolition by developers.

Now they have handed the running of the cafe to the team at Abbots and Kinney, who are ‘popping up’ in the space. And, Company Director and Operations Manager Richard Wilson, is happy to be there.

“It’s a great space and a beautiful location. We’re all about community, so this co-op is a perfect tie in for us.” he said.

“This is a pop-up for now, so a temporary solution, but we’re working hard to make it more than that”

Abbots and Kinney have made a name as one of the most lucrative bakery chains in Adelaide, growing from a one off pop-up stall into an ever-growing chain. And the pop-up Marino Rocks store will be slinging the Abbots’ goodness we all know and love.

“We’ve got some great coffee, a huge range of sweet treats, and an expanded range of savoury offerings that we’re really excited about. We’re adding some really fun, quirky sandwiches for something more substantial.” Wilson said.

Abbots and Kinneys’ expansion has since grown to shop fronts on the city campus of both UniSA and Adelaide University. In 2019, taking over from Red Door Bakery, Abbots and Kinney filled the bakery specific premises in Croydon’s Elizabeth Street as well.

Then, in 2021, Abbots and Kinney opened in Malvern, providing specialty coffee and freshly baked breads and pastries to yet another area of Adelaide.

But that’s not all, as the Abbots And Kinney team busily prepare for a number of exciting changes, and new locations in the coming weeks and months.

“We’ve got a great team and a whole lot of things in the works which we can’t wait to announce soon” Wilson said.

The Marino Rocks Cafe was built in 1961 by a local fisherman, Mr Bert Fooks, and was managed by his wife Mrs Rita Fooks who sold the fish caught by her husband. After more than fifty years of service to the Marino area, Marino local Ariella Helfgott initiated the co-op and brought seven other local women on board as founding members.
