Victorian restaurant group Hecho en Mexico (HEM) has expanded its footprint by opening its first South Australian outlet in Adelaide’s West End. Known for its vibrant and authentic Mexican street-style cuisine, HEM has become a notable name in the culinary scene since its inception in Fitzroy in 2013.
Since opening on Monday, Hecho en Mexico on Peel Street, is being celebrated with an array of enticing offers including $5 tacos and $13 classic margaritas, available for the first two weeks.
Also, from early August, every Wednesday – kids will eat free all day.
HEM uses fresh, locally sourced ingredients to craft its extensive menu, featuring dishes such as tortas, AL pastor tacos, gringas, fajitas, and the specially prepared birria chilaquiles. Among their standout offerings are the gourmet and birria tacos, particularly the pork taco—achiote marinated, orange-infused pulled pork shoulder topped with pineapple, slow-cooked overnight.
The new venue is pairing its menu with local South Australian wines from celebrated regions nearby. The wine list will include selections from St Hugo, Coriole, and Tomfoolery, along with an extensive range of HEM’s signature cocktails. Patrons will have an opportunity to explore eight different margaritas, from the popular guava margarita to an assortment of mezcalitas and other spirited beverages.
One of the highlights at the Adelaide restaurant will be the much-loved Bottomless Brunch from Melbourne—offering unlimited gourmet tacos and a selection of premium cocktails, along with beer, wine, and sangria—set to become a weekend staple.
The restaurant’s design has been executed by local firms including Arc Two Architects and Hussain Nouri from NCJ Projects, with signage crafted by GoMambo. The interior reflects a blend of contemporary style and Mexican cultural elements, intended to create an inviting atmosphere for diners.
Commenting on the new venture, Parveen Bajar, co-founder of HEM, stated, “We are excited to introduce authentic and modern Mexican cuisine to South Australia and are passionate about bringing traditional Mexican dishes directly from Mexico to Adelaide.” He added that the Adelaide location reflects the brand’s commitment to community engagement and economic contribution, having employed 15 local staff members, with plans to add five more to the team.
Bajar continued, “Our goal for expanding into Adelaide is to share our rich Mexican heritage and love of authentic flavours and recipes, which underpins the culture of our brand, as well as meeting and building relationships with the local community surrounding the CBD location and visitors alike.” He also noted plans to offer ongoing lunch deals and specials to provide value to their customers.
HEM’s successful franchise model, developed by founders Parveen Bajar and Menak Grover, has grown significantly since 2013, now boasting 20 locations nationwide with more expected in Cairns and across Victoria due to high demand.
The newly opened Adelaide restaurant, HEM’s 20th outlet, is poised to become a key dining destination in the city. The restaurant operates Monday through Sunday from 11.30am to 10pm, inviting both locals and tourists to explore its rich menu and lively atmosphere.
