As part of South Australia’s History Festival, running from May 1-31, Penfolds are opening their doors for intimate celebrations of the history and heritage of Adelaide’s most celebrated winery.
Since Penfolds’ beginning in 1844, the merging of science, art and innovation has allowed Penfolds to become one of Australia’s most famed and respected names in winemaking.
A Taste of Penfolds History, taking place on May 18, includes canapés and a glass of wine on arrival for guests at their Magill Estate Cellar Door as they enjoy a discussion about Penfolds’ incredible history and rise to become one of Australia’s most famed winemakers.
Those seeking a more relaxed experience can also enjoy the Penfolds 1844 for Evermore History Tour running throughout the month of May and the Penfolds 1844 for Evermore History Tour and Lunch Experience from Friday to Sunday in May during the Festival.
The History Trust of South Australia’s CEO, Greg Mackie OAM, said it was important to highlight the
corporate history of iconic South Australian brands like South Australia’s History Festival wine partner Penfolds.
“Wine has always played an important role in the history of South Australia, with the Penfolds story
one of the most iconic,” says Greg.
“The entrepreneurial spirit of Mary Penfold strikes a chord with many South Australians. South Australians feel pride and great affection for the Penfolds brand. It literally is history in every glass! And it’s the story behind this iconic South Australian company that the History Trust is delighted to showcase through our South Australia’s History Festival Partnership,” he concludes.
Mary Penfold’s legacy continues to be seen, with three female winemakers in the team, the largest number in the brand’s 179-year history, continue shaping innovation at Penfolds.
This historical focus feels particularly poignant in 2023. Mary Penfold’s legacy continues to be seen, with three female winemakers in the team, the largest number in the brand’s 179-year history, continue shaping innovation at Penfolds.
On April 27, Penfolds’ Global Ambassador Jamie Sach hosted a select group for South Australia’s History Festival to explore the brand’s Past, Present & Future, with a special focus on the history of Mary Penfold and her incredible story that still influences Penfolds today.
“Penfolds was founded in 1844 by pioneers Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary, just eight years after the first colonial settlers established the city of Adelaide,” Jamie Sach said. “In those early days, wine production served a pragmatic purpose, to be administered as tonics for a range of maladies. Brandy and fortified wines dominated early production, and Penfolds soon garnered an enviable reputation for producing wines of outstanding quality.”
Visitors can immerse themselves in the history of one of Australia’s oldest, iconic wineries. Walk through the original working winery, explore the vineyards, and uncover the historic tales of the underground drives as part of the Evermore History Tour which can be enjoyed with a two-course meal at the conclusion of the tour to complete the Penfolds experience.
South Australians are invited to explore the history of Penfolds, and Mary Penfold, this month as part of South Australia’s History Festival with events, experiences, and tours throughout the month of May.
