Peter Malinauskas announces restricted River Murray access amid continuing changes

Premier Peter Malinauskas and Deputy Police Commissioner Linda Williams have announced that the River Murray will be closed to any non-essential activity.

In today’s press conference, Premier Malinauskas highlighted the key reasons why these restrictions have been put in place.

“The key decision that was made at this morning’s meeting was to close the River Murray to all non-essential activity. This is a closure that takes effect immediately and will be in place for some time to come as we confront the ever-increasing flows of water down across the border,” Malinauskas announced.

Malinauskas admitted that this decision has “not been taken lightly” especially ahead of the festive season.

“This time of year, the Murray should be brimming with activity, but these measures need to be put in place,” Malinauskas said.

Malinauskas outlined the importance if the call with 3 key things mentioned in mind. Public safety, flexibility with SA Power connections and protecting already damaged levee banks.

All motorised and non-motorised vessels, swimming and fishing activity will not be allowed effective immediately.

Deputy Police Commissioner Linda Williams said officers would remain in place to monitor the river, with a four-knot limit remaining in place for those still able to use it.

“If people still ignore those guidance activities that we’ll perform, there is up to a $10,000 fine,” Deputy Commissioner Williams said.

The restrictions will be from the border of the SA border to Wellington.

The Premier stated that the restrictions won’t be lowered in early January, but will be assessed in the New Year.
