Peter Malinauskas reveals update as River Murray water levels peak

Earlier this morning Malinauskas met with various Riverland council members at the Renmark Club to discuss the progress of the River Murray flood waters.

Peter Malinauskas in a press conference this afternoon announced that the River Murray water levels have reached its “peak” and that the Riverland is still open for business and continuing to operate under safety measures.

Earlier this morning Malinauskas met with various Riverland council members at the Renmark Club to discuss the progress of the River Murray flood waters.

“There is some good news that the peak has now been reduced for 5 consecutive days,” Malinauskas said.

“This is the drop for the first time in a long time. Here in Renmark, we can say with a degree of confidence that the levees are working.

Malinauskas highlighted the need for tourism and visitorship in these trying times.

“Tourism is a part of the fabric of this community… and having those businesses get on their feet is something we need to look at asap,” Malinauskas said.

Tomorrow morning an emergency meeting will be called to discuss what’s next for the businesses and communities along the River Murray.

“We want to turn our mind to lifting those restrictions as it’s important for locals and visitors alike,” Malinauskas continued.

An SES official gave promising updates as the peak of the flood is behind us as it as dropped in the past couple of days.

“Measuring 175GGL for the 5th day in a row and we have now seen a drop pass through Renmark.”

Although the peak is behind us, there is still major safety precautions still in place as well as continuing evacuations.

Cowirra residents have been warned to leave now as flood waters threaten to isolate their homes.

The homes, opposite Mannum, are expected to become isolated with 24 hours due to deterioration and flooding of East Front Rd and Hunter Rd, Cowirra.

The passenger ferry between Cowirra and Mannum and the associated bus service will continue to run until 2pm on Wednesday, December 28, but will then be closed until further notice.

The intersection of Burdett Rd and Hunter Rd at Mannum will be closed to traffic.
