According to Hugh Hamilton Wines, tasting wine should involve all five senses and on Sunday 3 April they facilitated just that…

Inviting 100 guests to open up all of the senses, CEO Mary Hamilton helped officially launch their 2014 ‘Black Blood’ Single Vineyard Series.

Tantalising props were prepared for people to see, smell, touch, taste and consider – from listening to music to match the mood of the wine and touching the soils from which the wines are derived, to smelling jars filled with aromatic cues and inspecting the varying shades of red. This event went well beyond the bounds of a traditional tasting.

The ‘Black Blood’ series is a trio of wines that represent a wonderful journey into McLaren Vale Shiraz. Hugh Hamilton Wines has gone above and beyond the normal threshold to explore ‘Terroir’. This word encapsulates the taste of a wine due to its unique environment – altitude, climate, rainfall, temperature and soil.

Aside from site, this pioneering winery has gone to great lengths to keep everything else as consistent as possible – picking dates, winemaking approach, oak regime, maturation – so you can taste the place. The result is almost uncanny as each wine reflects a different Hugh Hamilton vineyard with a distinct terroir.

In the words of Hugh Hamilton, ‘Making the ‘Black Blood’ series has been a revelation to all of us here. When you blend grapes from different vineyards you mask the subtleties that the soil brings to the wine. Make single vineyard wines in exactly the same way as each other and it is the ‘big reveal’. Look at the soil and taste the wine.’
