Cherries are an absolute Christmas staple in Australia.

While there are plenty of places to buy great cherries in Adelaide at this time of year, many of the local orchards in the Hills actually open their gates for people to come in and pick their own.

Harrisville Orchard is one of the many Orchards where you are able to pick your own fruit this summer.

Located at 72 Harris Road Lenswood in the Hills, just on from Lobethal, this Orchard offers both ‘Shed Door’ and ‘Pick Your Own’ options for fresh cherries.

Harrisville Orchard has been awarded Champion at the Royal Adelaide Show consistently over the last 20 years.

Not only do they sell their awarding winning cherries, but also apple and cherry juice, as well as sparkling and Christmas gifts.

While at this time of year, cherries are the prime fruit of choice, Harrisville Orchard are the only commercial grower in Adelaide who also offer apple picking when in season. This normally falls in May.

The Orchard is open 9 till 5 Monday to Saturday throughout December until season finish (not Christmas Day).

Before you head up on your visit, make sure to check in and ensure that the Orchard is open that day. Growers can’t predict when they will sell out of ripe cherries, as unlike a lot of other fruits, cherries must be picked ripe.

When you are heading out to the Orchard, it is also important to check out the weather forecast in case of fire warnings or extreme heat. Other essentials are long pants, sandshoes or other enclosed flat shoes, a comfy top, sunscreen, a hat, and a drink bottle.
