Pick your own juicy apples at Lenswood’s season-opening

Lenswood Pick Your Own in the Adelaide Hills is officially opening its 2024 apple picking season this weekend.

There’s nothing like plucking a fresh, juicy apple straight from the tree to enjoy. And you can do exactly that at the 2024 season opening of Lenswood Pick Your Own.

The apple orchard’s third season will officially kick off by Minister for Tourism and Multicultural Affairs Zoe Bettsion this Saturday 24th February and then run until May.

While its worth the trip just to crunch into an apple straight off the tree from the magical 23-acre orchard, this year there’s a whole host of new activities which make the day trips there a unique and fun experience for the entire family.

Lenswood has some more improvements on last year, including a large sandpit, picnic tables, nature area to picnic, Kids Pomology Trail and an information trail where customers can learn how apples are grown.

Owner Emily has really been diving into the world of agritourism, teaming up with Minister Bettison to spruce up South Australia’s agricultural scene. They’ve been brainstorming and sharing insights during those Roundtable meetings, all part of the grand plan to boost the state’s Agritourism Sector by 2025.

Thanks to Emily’s knack for agritourism, she’s been lending a hand to fellow farmers and producers, helping them turn their properties into attractions that draw folks in.

Now, just as the apple-picking season kicks off, we’re hearing about a Senate Inquiry into supermarkets hiking up produce prices. But hey, here’s where the ‘Pick Your Own’ idea swoops in. It’s all about cutting out the middlemen and connecting farmers directly with consumers. Plus, it’s a hands-on lesson for us shoppers, getting to see firsthand where our food comes from and the effort it takes to grow it.

It all started in 2021 when registered Intensive Care Nurses Chris and Emily Shipway opened Lenswood Pick Your Own. They purchased their commercial apple orchard in 2019 with no farming or business experience and decided to turn it into an agritourism attraction – @Lenswood Pick Your Own.

In 2022 they opened their gates for the first time and were blown away with the popularity of the season – even showcasing their story on ABC’s Landline. In 2023, their second season they had 25,000 people through the orchard in less than 3 months. 2023 also saw the introduction of a Farm Café – incorporating locally produced food, vintage tractors for children to play on, school excursions and some weddings.

The orchard has also been able to contribute significant benefit to the local community – donating over $6,000 so far to the Lobethal RSL through ANZAC Day fundraising and donations and supporting The Lenswood General Store through re-selling their homemade baked goods amongst many other businesses in the local area.

The orchard boasts an array of apple variations like Gala, Golden Delicious, Fuji, Red Delicious, Rosy Glow, Pink Lady’s and Sundowners. They are all ready at different times throughout the season.

After you have picked out all the apples you desire, you can book a picnic on the grounds or head to their Farm Cafe & Shop which is stocked with locally produced food.

The best part about it all? You can bring your dog on a lead for a small donation which they give to Puppy Rescue.
