Pick Your Own Mushrooms In This 100-Year-Old Lime Cave (& Eat Them Too!)

If there’s one thing we’ve learned during the COVID-induced restrictions, it’s that South Australia has a whole lot of amazing and unique experiences to offer right here if you only look!

Take this for instance:

Maxwell Wines is home to an incredible 100-year-old lime cave. Not only is it a sought-after venue space, but also the perfect environment to grow mushrooms!

If you’re a fan of mushrooms, Maxwell offers the opportunity to explore the ancient, hand-dug cavern below and pick your own mushrooms, which you can use to cook up your very own risotto.

The experience starts in the Maxwell cellar door, where you’re treated to an overview of the Maxwell history, as well as a tour through the winery to learn about the wine making process.

Your tour will culminate at the 100-year-old lime cave, where the mushroom picking will begin!

With your freshly picked mushrooms, make your way back to the cellar door to collect your risotto pack, complete with a recipe card from Maxwell Wines chef, Fabian Lehmann.

The simple, but exquisite recipe will show you how to indulge and enjoy the lime cave mushrooms — and Maxwell will supply the wine too!

The unique mushroom experience is available to undertake all week (subject to availability), with tours kicking off at 10am and 3pm at $90 per couple.

Bookings are essential, so if this sounds right up your alley, email [email protected] or call 08 8323 8200.

Maxwell Wines is located at 19 Olivers Road, McLaren Vale 5171.
