Pick your own sunflowers at The Barns of Freeling

Go sunflower picking at The Barns of Freeling to raise money for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance.

The Barns of Freeling, just 15 minutes from Gawler and an hour north of Adelaide, has unveiled a surprise addition to its picturesque landscape – a vibrant patch of sunflowers with a sunflower picking fundraiser to accompany.

What makes this floral display even more special? It was planted clandestinely, without prior announcement, by the innovative team at The Barns of Freeling.

Taking advantage of favourable weather conditions following a late November/early December rainfall, the team decided to take a chance and sow sunflower seeds discreetly. Despite the lack of subsequent rain, the sunflowers thrived against the odds.

They’re turning their success into an opportunity through their “pick a sunflower for a gold coin donation” fundraiser, where visitors can experience the joy of picking sunflowers while supporting a good cause.

All proceeds from this initiative will benefit the Cerebral Palsy Alliance, a vital organisation dedicated to assisting individuals living with cerebral palsy through therapy, programs, equipment, and research.

Alongside making a donation for each sunflower picked, visitors are encouraged to water another sunflower nearby, ensuring that the beauty of the patch remains accessible to all. Watering cans are conveniently provided next to the donation box.

Accessing the sunflower patch is a breeze, with ample parking available in the paddock adjacent to the Southern side of Templers Road, just west of Freeling. Look out for signs or creatively disguised bales marking the way.

The patch will be open from sunrise to sunset each day until all the flowers are picked, offering plenty of opportunities to immerse oneself in nature while supporting a worthy cause.

For those planning a visit, it’s essential to note that The Barns of Freeling will be closed to the public during private functions scheduled for this weekend and the next. However, the sunflower patch will remain accessible during designated hours, welcoming visitors with open arms and vibrant blooms.

Entry to the sunflower field is free, with donations of a gold coin or more encouraged for each sunflower picked. And while enjoying the radiant beauty of sunflowers, visitors are reminded to be mindful of the resident bees, who play a crucial role in pollination. With their presence enhancing the ecological harmony of the patch, it’s a gentle reminder to coexist harmoniously with nature.

Beyond this sunflower event, The Barns of Freeling continues to captivate visitors with its unique offerings.

Last year, the establishment unveiled Australia’s first custom-built silo suites, blending rustic charm with modern luxury. These boutique accommodation retreats, housed within stylishly transformed grain silos, offer guests a one-of-a-kind experience amidst the serene backdrop of one of South Australia’s largest hay-producing regions.

Also prior to that, The Barns of Freeling’s historic chaff mill barn underwent a stunning transformation into a charming wedding venue. Originally built in 1921, the barn’s revival showcases a blend of heritage preservation and contemporary elegance, offering couples a picturesque setting for their special day.
