If you haven’t yet heard of Pickleball, don’t worry—you’re about to become the fun friend who introduces everyone else to the next big thing. It’s the fastest-growing sport in the world (no, seriously, it’s taking over), and it’s now serving up good times all over Adelaide and South Australia.
Pickleball is like if tennis, badminton and table tennis all had a beautiful, slightly quirky baby.
It’s played with paddles (not racquets), on a smaller court than tennis, using a plastic ball with holes. The result? A sport that’s ridiculously fun, surprisingly social, and far more accessible than you might think.
It was invented back in 1965 in the USA by three dads who were trying to entertain their bored kids. They improvised with ping pong paddles and a wiffle ball and voilà —Pickleball was born.
Fast-forward almost 60 years and it’s now huge in the States, with celebs like Leonardo DiCaprio and the Kardashians reportedly obsessed.

So why’s everyone going nuts for it? Well, you don’t need to be a super athlete to give it a go—people of all ages and fitness levels are getting amongst it. Whether you’re a fierce competitor or just want a laugh and a hit with mates, Pickleball is a winner.
Right here in South Australia, the sport is picking up serious pace. We’ve got our own association, Pickleball South Australia, and courts are popping up all over the place. You’ll find venues in the city, the suburbs and even in some regional towns like Mount Gambier and Kangaroo Island.
Pickleball South Australia President, Ruth Craven said that in just 18 months the association has doubled from approximately 400 members to a whopping 818 at the time of writing this article.
“Honestly we can’t keep up. People are just loving this game,” Ruth said.
“It’s incredibly social. The Pickleball crowd is famously friendly and welcoming.”
“There are beginner sessions, social comps, and all-ages events, so no matter who you are, you can give it a red hot go.”

And yep, you heard the gossip, Hollywood is catching Pickleball fever too. Rumour has it a Pickleball-inspired film is in the works.
So if you’re after a fresh way to get active, meet new people and have a bloody good time doing it, Pickleball is your answer.
Chuck on some comfy shoes, grab a paddle and give it a crack. You might just find your new favourite obsession.
Typically costs for a two hour session is between $5-$15 depending on whether you are a paid or on-member. Rock up to a session on your own or grab a few friends to join in the fun.
