Head down to the local Wheatsheaf Hotel this May for three nights of fascinating science talks and big ideas over a pint with the return of Pint of Science. Running from May 19 – 21, the festival is set to once again bring brilliant minds “out of the labs and into local pubs.”
For those unfamiliar, Pint of Science is a global not-for-profit initiative that reaches audiences in over 400 cities across 25 countries. The festival hosts a swathe of speakers and delves into a mixed bag of topics, covering everything from biology to psychology, mateship, pain, and even pregnancy. It allows specialists to bring their expertise to the public – and what better way to engage in a science chat than over banter and beer at a pub?
This year’s Adelaide program offers a cracking lineup, kicking off on Monday 19 May with Mental Health on Tap: A Pint Talk for Blokes and Mates. Led by Flinders University’s Dr Ian Zajac, the talk dives into men’s mental health, exploring how to spot when a mate’s struggling and what you can actually do to help. It’ll offer a real talk on mateship and showing up when it matters, backed with research and open discussion.
On Tuesday 20 May, prepare for a pain-ful chat with Ouch! The Anatomy of Pain, presented by Professor Rainer Haberberger from the University of Adelaide. Ever wondered how pain signals travel from your skin to your brain? This talk takes you on a journey of physical pain, starting in the tiny nerves of your joints all the way to your brain. Don’t worry, the only challenge is unpacking the science, not feeling the pain.
Closing out the program on Wednesday 21 May is Beyond the Bump: How the Placenta Ages and Affects Your Pregnancy, featuring Dr Anya Arthurs, also from the University of Adelaide. Expect an interesting insight into the placenta’s “choreographed lifespan” and what happens when this vital organ starts ageing too early and stops functioning before the baby is born.
If you’re after a pub chat with a little more depth, this is the perfect chance to quench your curiosity. It’s drink-for-thought and ready to host your next catch up with mates.
