Pirate Life and St Agnes Distillery collab for ultimate brandy beer release

Port Adelaide’s own Pirate Life are collaborating with South Australian brand, St Agnes Distillery, to bring brandy and beer together.

Port Adelaide’s own Pirate Life are collaborating with South Australian brand, St Agnes Distillery, to bring brandy and beer together.

The Sidecar Sour Ale takes inspiration from the classic cocktail, which is mature, refined and oddly vintage. It’s a cocktail that has all of the black-tie whimsy that one would associate with The Great Gatsby or the Jazz Age.

The tart and rich cocktail has the orange, citrus twist which one might attribute to the lemon juice and triple sec, but the cognac/brandy hint of wine is what makes perfecting a Sidecar such a tough task.

While Pirate Life has recently made a name for itself through odd flavours, including its Maple Bacon Coffee Porter from 2021 and its Dilmah Tea and Biccies beer from 2020, its collaboration with St Agnes is another South Aussie collab that follows its recent commemorative Largs Pier release.

St Agnes is based out of Renmark, best known for its brandy collection, hence the iconic fusion of beer and the classy cocktail.

The Pirate Life online store describes the new drop as “brimming with old world charm,” with the option to purchase this four-pack pairing of SA powerhouses for $22 (plus shipping).

Each can is 355ml of sud-drenched regal state pride, with an ABV (Alcohol By Volume) of 7.5%.

The beer is said to achieve similar palate notes to the original drink through introducing good bacteria to the wort, which is the liquid extracted during the brewing process, to sour it and emulate the lemon zest.

Only 5000 litres of the bubbly brandy beverage will be brewed, making this an incredibly limited and special edition for beer lovers to keep a can in their collection, while enjoying the three others in the pack.

Pirate Life was founded in 2014, but St Agnes have been perfecting their craft since 1925 which truly adds to the authenticity of the ritzy cocktail-crafted cans.

The beer is only available to purchase through the official Pirate Life website and select independent retailers.
