Pirate Life brewery has revealed a new collaboration with St Agnes Distillery. Together, they have crafted a barrel-aged Imperial Stout which is the product of a two-year development process. This exciting new offering was launched amidst the festive spirit of a sold-out Christmas in July event at Pirate Life’s Port Adelaide venue.

The eagerly awaited Imperial Stout is now available for purchase. It can be found at the Adelaide Beer & BBQ Festival, Pirate Life Brewing in Port Adelaide, and a selection of specialised retailers. This marks the second collaboration between these two renowned South Australian brands, following an earlier successful partnership.

Jack Cameron, co-founder of Pirate Delight, spoke about the collaboration, highlighting the pride his team takes in producing exceptional beer. “We’re stoked to finally be able to share this one! Collaborating with an iconic South Australian brand, and Australia’s oldest continually run craft distillery is an absolute privilege and we couldn’t be happier with how the product has turned out. We pride ourselves on good quality beer and what the team has been able to deliver here is unreal,” Cameron said.

The key feature of this unique beer is its eight-month maturation process in ex-brandy barrels, previously used by St Agnes Distillery. This not only infuses the stout with rich aromatics but also contributes to its complex flavour profile. The beer boasts notes of chocolate ganache, enhanced by a rich malt bill that includes roasty nuttiness, chocolate undertones, and subtle spice – all finely mingled with the woody essence and nuances of the brandy cask.

Richard Angove, Co-Managing Director at St Agnes Distillery, also shared his thoughts on the collaboration. “This will be our second collaboration with Pirate Life, both of which have yielded spectacular beers. The St Agnes Distillery is 99 years old this year. Each barrel has been used to age our brandy over many years and captures the essence of the distillery. We were excited to send our historic barrels to Pirate Life for use in the maturation of the ‘St Agnes Distillery x Pirate Life Stout’,” said Angove.

Jake Haysman, a Brewer at Pirate Life, spoke about the partnership and the enhanced complexity brought to the stout through the use of brandy casks saying, “The brandy casks have added layers of complexity to our stout, rewarding the drinker with a truly unique experience. This has been a fantastic opportunity to work with like-minded people and explore new flavours and techniques,” he commented.
