The first whales of the season are starting to appear along South Australia’s coastlines, with the most recent sighting in Fowlers Bay. Fowlers is on the Eyre Peninsula, located 917km from Adelaide, or a 5 hour drive from Port Lincoln (for those looking for a shortcut). Every year, the area comes alive with whale lovers, who travel to the far West Coast of SA, to experience these bucket list moments.

The emergence of these majestic beasts of the ocean marks the perfect time to start organising your whale watching trips, and with the season lining up well with school holidays, there’s no excuse not to explore South Australia’s unspoilt Western coast.

The Eyre Peninsula has a world of wonder on offer, so the best way to explore this often unexplored region of SA is with the guidance of experts. So, if you’re looking for the best way to go whale watching, getting out on the water and immersing yourself in the wild, we’ve found the perfect way to do this.

In a boat fit for the kings and queens of the sea, EP Tours offer an up-close and personal experience with these gorgeously gentle creatures, with their whale watching cruises in Fowlers Bay.

Hop aboard the epic 50ft passenger vessel dubbed ‘Asherah’, sail the bay, and take in the extensive list of captivating wildlife frolicking the waters and skies.

The interactive and informative cruise is an excellent way to discover the fascinating history of Fowlers Bay, and marvel the wondrous sights of the Eyre Peninsula. The immersive experience captivates all of your sense, as you even listen to realtime underwater acoustics including the famous Humpback Whale song.

Home to an abundance of endangered and protected species of marine mammals and oceanic bird life, whales aren’t the only wildlife you’ll see in Fowlers Bay, including:

  • Southern Right Whales
  • Humpback Whales
  • Common Dolphins
  • Bottlenose Dolphins
  • Australian Sea Lions
  • New Zealand Fur Seals
  • Little Penguins
  • Albatross
  • White Bellied Sea Eagles

The brains behind EP Cruises, husband and wife team Rod and Simone Keogh, relocate to Fowlers Bay every year for the season to bring the tours to life for visitors of the area.

Sparked in 2009 after their first thrilling encounter with a gentle 60ft female Southern Right Whale swimming under the tiny boat they had at the time, the pair wanted to share their new found passion with the public and therefore launched EP Cruises the following year.

If now you’re thinking, how do we get there!? There’s several ways to make your journey to this unforgettable location. Firstly, you can fly direct to Fowlers Bay from Adelaide Airport, which will take you just over an hour.

Your second option is a little more interesting, and gives you a great excuse to take in as much of South Australia as possible. Take a flight from Adelaide Airport to Port Lincoln, hiring a car, then travel past Coffin Bay, where you can squeeze in another bucket list moment – enjoying oysters while sitting in the ocean at Oyster HQ. Then head North for a 5 hour scenic drive to Fowlers Bay.

There’s a coast full of gorgeous destinations on your way to Fowlers Bay, with other possible pitstops including Venus Bay, Smoky Bay and Ceduna, all with their own treasures to be shared.

This year, the charter season with EP Cruises kicks off on 20 July and runs through 20 October, giving you plenty of time to make the trip and experience the breathtaking wonders that Fowlers Bay has to offer.

If you’re up for the ultimate adventure, pack your bags and head for the Eyre Peninsular, because our own backyard is full of wonders worth exploring.
