Mount Barker is set for a major boost to its tourism and entertainment offering, with Wallis Entertainment securing planning approval for a new hotel and family-focused entertainment precinct in the Adelaide Hills.
The approval marks a significant milestone for the long-anticipated Project Mt Barker development, paving the way for a new accommodation offering alongside a suite of experiences designed to attract locals and visitors to the rapidly growing Hills township.
“Securing planning approval is a significant step forward,” said Deanna Wallis. “This has been a complex and, at times, emotionally gruelling process — and reaching this point is something we’re genuinely proud of.” She also acknowledged the teams who helped bring the application to this stage, saying, “We’re incredibly grateful to our planners, architects and traffic engineers who have worked tirelessly with us throughout this process.”
At the heart of the approved plans is a new hotel aimed at strengthening accommodation options in the Adelaide Hills and supporting the region’s visitor economy. The development is designed to showcase what the Hills has to offer to intrastate, interstate and international travellers, while giving locals new reasons to spend time in Mt Barker.
“This project is something that is truly needed for our hills community but also, the state more broadly,” Wallis said.
The entertainment precinct will feature a range of attractions including duckpin bowling, laser tag, crazy mini golf, arcade games and a dedicated sensory-friendly space, creating a destination designed to appeal to families, groups and younger audiences.
The redevelopment will build on the existing cinema site, transforming it into a broader lifestyle and entertainment hub.
As part of the refresh, Oak & Iron Tavern will also be upgraded, with improvements aimed at enhancing the guest experience while maintaining the venue’s familiar character.
While the hotel operator and brand have not yet been revealed, agreements are progressing behind the scenes. “We know there’s strong interest in who will operate the hotel and what the brand will be,” Wallis said. “What we can say for now is that the hotel brand is iconic — and we’re working toward an outcome that aligns with the quality, hospitality and long-term vision we want for this precinct. We look forward to sharing more in due course.”
The project builds on Wallis Entertainment’s decades-long presence in the Adelaide Hills and reflects the region’s growth as both a residential centre and visitor destination. With Mt Barker continuing to expand, the development is expected to provide new entertainment options for families and young people, while also supporting tourism and local businesses.
With planning approval now secured, the precinct will move into the next stages of approvals and detailed design, with further updates to be shared as the project progresses toward delivery.
