Plans for transformation in Adelaide’s north see longest rail corridor in history proposed

The Malinauskas Labor Government have proposed plans for Adelaide’s longest rail corridor, aiming to extend public transport in the northern suburbs.

The Malinauskas Labor Government has announced plans for the longest rail corridor in recent history, potentially extending public transport to Two Wells. The plans involve linking a new mass transit corridor to the existing metropolitan network at Dry Creek, passing through Waterloo Corner and Riverlea, and ending at Two Wells.

Covering approximately 33 kilometres, this proposed corridor surpasses the combined lengths of the existing Roseworthy, Concordia, and Sellicks Beach rail preservation projects.

Nick Champion MP, Minister for Housing and Urban Development, shared, “The northern suburbs are the fastest growing region in our state. More homes are being built in South Australia than ever before. With this growth comes a need to plan and coordinate future transport infrastructure to unlock more housing. We will not make the mistakes of past governments by not delivering infrastructure at the same rate of housing growth.”

According to projections, northern Adelaide will house 40 per cent of the greater Adelaide population increase over the next three decades. This growth translates to approximately 113,000 new dwellings and an influx of 250,000 residents, confirming the need for infrastructure development.

Emily Bourke MLC, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, said, “Preserving a rail corridor of this size and scale has never been done before. Public transport keeps communities connected, drives economic growth and takes more cars off our road network.”

The planning phase will continue to refine the options, secure the corridor, and develop potential infrastructure solutions and cost estimates. The intended rail line will offer future state and federal governments the basis to consider a complete train network servicing the area up to Two Wells.

Tony Piccolo, Labor Candidate for Ngadjuri, added, “Work is already underway to preserve a rail corridor to Roseworthy and Concordia. Securing an additional line all the way through to Two Wells is true leadership, providing future governments with more options to service our new communities.”

The Malinauskas Labor Government say this historic rail corridor preservation could significantly improve transit options and shape the infrastructure landscape in Adelaide’s north.
