It seems to be Cellar Door season. A long list of South Australia’s most famous wineries are undergoing multi-million dollar refurbishments.
Bird In Hand reopened its stunning Cellar Door in February; Shaw + Smith last week revealed its new tasting room; Nepenthe opened their new cellar door yesterday; and Yangarra are set to reveal their renovations within the next month.

And now there’s another one on the list, as Skillogalee Wines formally submit plans for a complete refurbishment of their Clare Valley cellar door.
The current Cellar Door is full of character and history but the owners believe the existing amenity doesn’t match the world class food and wine offering. So they’ve got plans to restore the stone building and demolish the existing extension.

In its place will be a stunning extension, including a kitchen, dining space, cellar, rooftop garden and breathable terrace space that embraces the old olive tree. In total, the new space will fit up to 130 guests.
Architects SMFA said “This is a really considered and graceful extension to the existing cellar door. The project will hero the existing stone cottage that is full of character and history, the proposed extension in its place of the current will provide a new cellar door and restaurant experience, with an experiential and interactive cellar and rooftop garden.”

It comes after Skillogalee Estate revealed their new brand identity and packaging in August last year, as Clare Valley trailblazer Kerri (KT) Thompson took the helm of the winery as consultant winemaker.
Simon Clausen, Skillogalee’s owner said “We know just how much people love our historic cottage, and the cherished memories that have been created there. We treasure that and take the responsibility of custodianship very seriously. For us, it’s imperative that we preserve the soul and identity of Skillogalee, while also allowing it to evolve into the future.”
“If we receive approval for this project, we will take our time to carefully select the right builders, tradespeople and artisans to ensure that we celebrate the cottage’s 170-plus years while breathing new life into this amazing property for the next century and beyond.”
Simon said Skillogalee was also planning to create new luxury accommodation on the estate.
“We’d love to bring a new type of luxury accommodation to this stunning region – we’re actively involved in design stages now and we are really excited to see where that process leads us.”
