In a significant development, the State Government has unveiled the first architect’s impression of the upcoming Gepps Cross Barracks. Designed with modernity and animal welfare at its core, the new facilities are set to revolutionize the Mounted Operations Unit (MOU) in South Australia.
The state-of-the-art barracks will feature 32 expansive stables and a dedicated undercover arena, ensuring optimal conditions for the unit’s equine members. In addition, the Dog Operation Unit will find a new home at Gepps Cross, complete with specialized kennels and advanced training facilities.
Currently under review by the Public Works Committee, the project carries an estimated relocation cost of $90 million. This budget encompasses essential infrastructure upgrades, including enhancements to the Grand Junction Road and Briens Road access points.
With a completion timeline set for mid-2024, the move will pave the way for the Thebarton site’s transformation. The historic location, over a century old, will soon make way for the new Women’s and Children’s Hospital, slated for completion by 2030-31.
The Gepps Cross Barracks promises to elevate the standard of accommodation and amenities for both staff and animals. This commitment aligns with the SA police’s mission to provide top-tier service and support for the community.
As the project progresses, further details are being ironed out, including the establishment of a city staging post for the MOU.
Treasurer Stephen Mulligan said the Government has been working closely with SA police to deliver a new, purpose built home for the police greys and dogs.
“We are investing in better facilities to ensure our police have a modern workplace, in line with other jurisdictions, to better support them in keeping the community safe.”
“Unlike the current site, Gepps Cross will meet the needs of police for decades to come.”
“This is a vital step towards a new Women’s and Children’s Hospital and we are getting on with the job.”
