Popeye’s new Art Boat brings vibrancy to the River Torrens

Adelaide’s iconic Popeye has unveiled its second Ramsay Art Boat, continuing a delightful tradition that merges art with the beauty of the Karrawirra Pari (River Torrens). Following the success of the inaugural Ramsay Art Boat, the James and Diana Ramsay Foundation, in collaboration with Guildhouse, proudly launched River Tapestry today, capturing the spirit and culture of South Australia.

The first Ramsay Art Boat, Good Job, created by local artist Carly Snoswell, garnered rave reviews for its stunning design featuring sequinned stars and the shimmering Milky Way.

Now, artist Alice Lindstrom takes the reins with her new creation, which celebrates the river as a vital ecosystem where people, animals, and plants coexist harmoniously.

Lindstrom’s artwork utilizes bronze metallic vinyl, neon tubing, and vibrant collages to highlight the beauty of the Red Gum River Forest. Drawing inspiration from the warm hues of the sunset, her design captures the river’s winding form and vibrant life.

“I wanted to evoke the beauty of the golden hour, with soft pinks and deep oranges contrasting with the greens of the riverbank,” she explained.

“The flowing lines in the design reflect not only the river’s geography but also the journey of water itself.”

The launch event was a joyous occasion, attended by art lovers and community members eager to witness the latest addition to Popeye’s floating gallery.

Kerry de Lorme, Executive Director of the James and Diana Ramsay Foundation, emphasised the importance of supporting local artists.

“James and Diana were passionate about the arts, and we’re thrilled to continue their legacy by promoting South Australian talent,” she said.

As Good Job completes its final journey, the community looks forward to embracing River Tapestry as a new beacon of artistic expression on the Torrens.

Lindstrom reflected on her excitement.

“I can’t wait to show my own children the artwork I created. I hope it brings joy and celebrates the life along the river,” she said.

The Ramsay Art Boats not only beautify the river but also deepen the connection between art, nature, and the community. As the Popeye continues to sail, it promises to offer a unique experience that enriches the cultural landscape of Adelaide.

For those interested in viewing the stunning new artwork, River Tapestry will be cruising daily along the river.
