Popular Cantonese Chinatown restaurant announces immediate closure

Known for its delicious offering of traditional Cantonese-style dishes, this inner-city spot closed its doors last weekend after eight years.

Kowloon Restaurant, known for its delicious offering of traditional Cantonese-style dishes, announced its immediate closure last weekend after eight years.

The team took to Facebook and shared a heartfelt post, pointing at life’s pressures as the cause of closure.

“I was very reluctant, but the times changed and the pressure of reality made me have to put my hands down,” they shared.

The message also thanked customers for the support over the years, expressing that the restaurant went beyond cooking, it shared all the milestones with those who dined.

“Over the years, I have not only cooked, I have stayed with you for birthday, dating, family gatherings… so many stories, this is happening here, and I’ve been witness to it,” they added.

“Thank you very much. Toast to the Kowloon Restaurant.”

The restaurant joins a swathe of business closures in recent months, with notable names like Nu Thai, the Chateau Apollo and Roxie’s corner, and Spellmans’ Social also saying their final goodbyes.

Nestled in Adelaide Central, a minute’s walk from Gouger Street, Kowloon Restaurant was a place celebrated for its signature oven-baked rice and spaghetti entrees, as well as popular baked, crumbed pork chop, fried rice with tomato sauce, and Hong Kong-style beverages.

Labelled as “The unique HongKong “Cha Chan Tang” in Adelaide,” the place was reminiscent of a classic ‘tea restaurant,’ a Hong Kong-style cafe known for its fusion of unpretentious East-meets-West comfort food. The sort of place where you’d probably find a plastic binder menu with a hundred dishes on it and wonder how the one chef in the kitchen is slinging delicious food at such a pace. You’d also probably end up ordering the whole menu, distracted by the strong Sichuan aroma and the sizzling dishes on the table next to you.

With a stellar customer rating of 4.2 and reviews like “Great tasting Cantonese food, which made me feel I was back in Hong Kong” and “Great friendly staff service and great value for money and great meals”, this comfort food haven will likely be missed by many.

As for what’s next in this prime inner-city location, we’ll have to keep our eyes peeled.
