After a well-earned hiatus over the winter, popular Fleurieu Peninsula pizzeria Side Hustle Pizza has reopened the doors of its Carrickalinga restaurant to serve up authentic, wood-fired pizza and homemade gelato all summer.
Now open every Friday and Saturday, Side Hustle is ready to once again rock your taste buds with its Neapolitan-style pizza, drinks and desserts.
Side Hustle provides your favourite pizza go-to’s with Margherita, Capricciosa and Salamino to name a few. They’re also not opposed to hitting the sweet spot with a delicious Nutella-flavoured pizza. Beyond pizza, Side Hustle serves up a range of delicious wood oven sandwiches, such as the prosciutto with pesto, fior di latte, and rocket, or the salami with provolone, sun-dried tomato, and spicy mayo.
What started out as a hidden gem has quickly grown into a local favourite of Fleurieu Peninsula locals and day trippers alike in the last few years. Chef and owner Nicholas Barone started the business on a whim after pursuing a baking venture in 2019.
“I have always loved baking and in 2019, I would bake things like focaccias and bagels filled with various antipasto to sell to local offices for business lunches,” Barone says.
“There was no venue housing authentic Neapolitan pizza around the area. Being good with my hands, I spent almost a month building my brick oven and getting a good dough recipe together, it was quite random, to be honest,” Barone continued.
Following the success of Side Hustle, Barone honoured his baking background in early 2024 when he opened a sibling business in Goodwood called Tonino Deli. Co-owned with his sister Anna-Lisa Barone, Tonino offers a contemporary approach to the traditional European deli, featuring a vibrant space where patrons can indulge in authentic sandwiches, coffee, wine, cocktails, spritzes and more.
Tonino remained open during winter this year while Side Hustle took a break, but both establishments will be serving up their signature dishes in full swing all summer.
