Goodslice Pizza in Glenelg took to social media this week to share the news that after two decades of trade, it was finally time to close its doors for good.
The restaurant wrote, “Goodslice is now permanently closed.”
“They say it takes a great community to make a good pizza… and we agree. What a community! From amazing South Australian suppliers producing local SA ingredients for our unique pizzas.
The restaurant has been through a few iterations in its time, with GoodLife Pizza being its original name, and ‘it’s all in the source’ its motto. In 2003, brothers Jake, Martin and Michael Greenrod opened the first location on Hutt Street. In its original form, the pizza bar was one of the first in Australia to champion organic ingredients at the forefront. It quickly earned a cult following for its handmade dough and organic local produce.
During its run as GoodLife, the restaurant claimed the title of ‘Best Pizza Restaurant in Australia’ three times, with its final national win in 2010. It also won seven consecutive SA Restaurant and Catering Awards. The restaurant was also Australia’s first certified organic and carbon-neutral pizza restaurant.
The business later expanded with new locations on Jetty Road, Glenelg and on O’Connell St in North Adelaide. All three of these locations continued to serve up healthy, organic pizzas (hence ‘GoodLife’) until 2019, when Martin and Michael moved on from the business. Simultaneously, the Hutt Street and North Adelaide locations reached the end of their run, and Jake rebranded the Jetty Road shop to ‘Goodslice Pizza’.
After its rebrand, the Glenelg venue became known for its bold menu additions, from vegan zucchetti to a giant, DIY slice served on a specially made board. Standouts included free-range duck with shiitake mushrooms and ginger jam, and a gourmet twist on the classic Hawaiian using Barossa bacon and local cheese. They also poured only South Australian wines including their own label, Green Road Wines, produced from a McLaren Vale vineyard they purchased in 2013. The pizza shop eventually moved to a takeaway-only format early this year.
In the announcement, Goodslice continued to write, for the “… brilliant teams of great smiling staff, many who have become lifelong friends, we are truly grateful. And to the lovely customers, some who have been consistent visitors for over 22 years we say thank you.”
“It’s been an amazing ride,” they concluded.
