Popular mochi and dessert pop-up returns to Rundle Mall this July

SHMOCHI by Shibui is back in the mall this winter with inventive new flavours and decadent desserts.

The crew behind popular dessert venue SHMOCHI by Shibui is bringing their pop-up back to Rundle Mall this month after becoming a winter fixture for half a decade. Setting up shop once again in the Gawler Street canopy on the north side of the mall, this will be the caterer’s first pop-up since opening their popular new dessert bar in St Peters.

The pop-up has just opened for the winter, and will open daily from 11am, serving their signature mochi-based sweet treats until Sunday 17 August.

“We love Rundle Mall and being amongst the hustle and bustle of the Adelaide CBD,” Lisa Chao, Shmochi By Shibui Co-Owner said. “We are celebrating by releasing an exclusive flavour just for Rundle Mall.”

That exclusive flavour is a White Rabbit Candy panna cotta soft serve that the team is sure will go down a treat. Also on the menu you’ll find vanilla and purple taro soft serve, hot mochi donuts, fish shaped waffle cones, and even extravagant donut sundaes if you’re extra hungry.

If you haven’t tried mochi doughnuts before, you’re in for a treat. They’re delightfully chewy and ever-so-slightly crisp. At the pop-up, you’ll be able to order them fresh and warm, topped with either condensed milk or icing sugar.

The SHMOCHI pop-up follows the recent launch of the brand’s new permanent store in St Peters. Owners Lisa Chao, Thy Nguyen and Quang Nguyen opened the venue earlier this year after years of running festival pop-ups and operating Shibui Dessert Bar on Grote Street. So far, the new permanent home for SHMOCHI by Shibui has had an incredible response.

“The response to Shmochi by Shibui from our local community is very humbling. The St Peters residents have really embraced our venue and it is wonderful to see regular customers returning to try our new desserts and new flavours,” Lisa said.

“People are loving trying all of our nostalgic ice cream flavours. We have so many more coming and we are looking forward to sharing them! People have flocked to the store for our truffle soft serve.”

Meanwhile, the team has temporarily closed their original venue, Shibui, with plans to totally transform the offering and have it reopened by late 2025.

While we wait for Shibui’s reopening, the Rundle Mall pop-up caters to the grab-and-go style demand of the city centre. Pick up your favourite sweet treat, or try one of the new flavours, as you pass through the mall on the way to one of Adelaide’s many winter festivities. Or perhaps swing past on your lunch break for a weekday tidbit.
