Calling all plant lovers! The popular pop-up shop Camel & Fig has opened its brick and mortar, just a stone’s throw from the bustling streets of Jetty Road and Glenelg.

Slinging artisan cups of coffee, selling lush plants galore and even moonlighting as a mini bookshop – Camel & Fig might just be the beachside shop of our dreams.

Camel & Fig regularly starred at the Glenelg Sunset Markets since 2020, as well as hosting a pop-up shop in Harbour Town and at the Mile End homemaker centre. The evergreen plants and pots oasis planted its roots in Glenelg in late November, opening the Camel & Fig brick and mortar on Cowper Street, just off Jetty Road.

The everlasting greenery and colourful flowers stretch the span of the shop, melding into the floral wallpaper and transforming the Glenelg store into a plant lover’s paradise. Find leafy ferns and sweet as succulents potted in thoughtfully made, terracotta plants. While you’re there, pick up gorgeous bunches of native flowers, blooming bright colours.

“We wanted to create a space that is relaxing and peaceful for people to go to, and to offer products for people to create their own beautiful spaces at home,” said owner Meisha Roberston.

Evolving from a market stall and pop-up shop into a permanent storefront has allowed Misha and the Camel & Fig team to carve out a space that’s equal parts peaceful as it is beautiful.

“It’s a lot of fun, you can generate a look and style that helps you to build the brand more, and it’s allowed us to branch out to do coffees and books,” said Meisha.

“We’ve always lived near Glenelg, so we’ve always wanted to open the shop in the area and when this place popped up it was perfect.

“It’s a spot that is a bit more quiet, off the beaten track so we can offer a space that has a little a bit more serenity.”

And the best thing of all – it’s all good if you have a knack for (accidentally) killing a house plant or two, as the Camel & Fig has a range of luxe faux plants for you to love and home, with a little less TLC involved.

Come for a plant, stay for a coffee or a quick peruse through the offering of books tucked away on shelves of the Camel & Fig store. The store is the perfect place to catch up with friends for a cup of coffee after hitting the shops on the busy Jetty Road precinct.

Camel & Fig also offer a range of workshops to Adelaidians wishing to immerse themselves further into the magic of floral arranging. During the festive season, the shop hosted popular wreath-making sessions, which sold out in a flash.

Camel & Fig have also devised a line-up of kids workshops for the remainder of the school holiday season. Designed for kids aged 5 to 12, watch your little ones’ green thumb and creative streak flourish as they design their flower arrangements in an animal-themed plant pot of their choice. The fully-supervised classes range between $50 to $60, depending on the size of the pot chosen.

Looking into the future, Camel & Fig are excited to expand their offerings even further this year, hoping to secure outside seating and serve sweet treats to customers. But for now, you can hang out in the peaceful plant paradise and feel totally zen – just what January 2022 ordered.

“It’s all about creating a unique space for yourself. I love plants and gardening and all that, so it just came together,” said Meisha.

“Our favourite thing is the creativity of it. It is a very creative space. And we love the customers that come in – they inspire us to do more. Working in this space is my favourite.”
