With 150 years of history in its pocket and some French inspiration, a new chapter has commenced at Mayfair Bakery & Patisserie.
Head baker and owner, Phillip Donnelly, continues to write this history, in what is now his sixth year of ownership.
The traditional meat pie has acquired an equally delicious vegetarian counterpart, and vegan donuts are also available.
The menu starts with Spinach and Feta Rolls, Cheeseburger, or Madras Curry pies and Kranskys, before weaving its way to Bread and Butter Croissant Puddings, Belgian Chocolate Brownies and the “Best Vanilla Custard Tarts in Adelaide,” according to Phil’s mother.
Their latest innovation is a Gluten-Free Vanilla Bean and Blueberry Cheesecake, “made in [their] shop to be sold in yours,” and will be available in the freezer section of many supermarkets in the coming days.
The bakery works closely with schools around Adelaide, allowing interested students to complete their work experience.
“It’s such a privilege to see kids who have come through work experience,” says Phil.
The bakery is nestled on its original footings at 156 St Vincent Street, Port Adelaide.
Phil swears that the sea air imbibes each and every one of his cakes with a special Port Adelaidean essence.
You can both see and smell the sea while you sit either inside or out on one of their picnic style chairs and chat to Phil or one of the local employees.
“There’s a reason I love it, and there’s a reason why so many people love it,” says Phil.
