Port Elliot on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula is known for its seaside views, picturesque Horseshoe Bay, and laid-back vibe. The Flying Fish Restaurant has cashed in on that charm for decades, and now it’s revealed plans for a major renovation to become “the most recognised seaside eatery in SA”.
“We’re really excited for this project, the big thing for us is to get the space working properly. We believe the [Flying Fish] should be the preeminent beachside location in South Australia. It’s such a fantastic location, whether you’re coming off the beach and enjoying the views or having a meal overlooking the bay,” co-owner Seb Packer tells Glam Adelaide.

The major overhaul of the Flying Fish Restaurant is being proposed to ensure the long-term success of the beachside business. According to Seb it’s in need of a serious facelift and rejig of layout for it to run smoothly.
“The space as it currently sits is very confusing and we want to turn it into one large space that combines the kiosk and restaurant,” Seb says.
“When we purchased the Flying Fish a year and a half ago my business parter Ben Goldsmith and I wanted to take it to the next level.”
The plans for the proposed $750,000 redevelopment designed by BB Architects include a new “esplanade” entrance and front deck that allows for casual dining straight from the beach, a relocated kiosk deck and a new space that caters up to 110 people for all-day and night dining including a new menu with a classic up-market seaside pub food.
“There will be all-day dining plus a roaring night time menu. There will be a woodfire pizza oven and a new bar area which feeds onto the side desk and kiosk. Whether you’re coming off the beach in bathers for a beer and champagne or for something more formal with a view, we will cater for it,” Seb says.
The new look and feel of the venue is modern and bright, but still encapsulates that beachside charm we all know and love.

“We wanted to encompass the beach shack photos we come across from the building that was there 100 years ago. We want [the renovated Flying Fish] to feel like you’re going to a good friends beach house where you can just relax,” Seb says.
“Whether you’re coming off the beach or going down for a special occasion, we want to cater to everybody.”
The plans are currently in the public consultation period where people can comment or provide feedback on the project. The construction is scheduled to start right after the Easter Holidays in 2024 and finish just before summer starts in December 2024.
