Port Willunga Beach, nestled approximately 35 kilometres south of Adelaide, is the backdrop of a captivating underwater adventure this January 21st. Snorkel enthusiasts and history buffs alike are invited to join professional snorkel leaders and marine biologists for a guided wreck snorkel that explores the remnants of the famous shipwreck ‘Star of Greece’ and the vibrant marine life that now calls it home.

The Port Willunga Beach snorkel by Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries Incorporated promises a unique and unforgettable experience for those who seek to connect with history beneath the waves.

The reef, where the ‘Star of Greece’ found its final resting place, offers a glimpse into the past and an opportunity to encounter a colourful array of fish and plant life.

To participate in this exciting adventure, snorkelers should possess the necessary fitness and water confidence, as the journey includes a 600-metre beach walk followed by a 120-metre swim out to the shipwreck, which lies at depths of up to 5 meters.

Port Willunga Beach, often hailed as one of the region’s most picturesque coastal gems, boasts stunning golden cliff faces, crystal-clear waters, and soft white sands that beckon beachgoers. It’s the ideal setting for leisurely strolls along the wet sand, with nothing but the soothing sound of waves lapping at your feet.

Perched on the cliff top overlooking the beach is the renowned Star of Greece restaurant, named in honor of the shipwreck that lies nearby.

The Star of Greece, a three-masted iron vessel with a weight of 1257 tons, was constructed in Belfast in 1868. Tragically, it met its fate during a violent storm off Port Willunga on July 13, 1888. The ship, laden with wheat, came perilously close to the shore, breaking apart just 200 metres from safety.

Today, interpretive signs at Port Willunga recount the tragic tale of the Star of Greece, situated near a café bearing its name. During low tide, fragments of the shipwreck remain visible from the shoreline, serving as a poignant reminder of the past.

For those with a love for history and a thirst for adventure, the Star of Greece Shipwreck Snorkel offers an opportunity to dive into the annals of maritime heritage and explore the vibrant underwater world thriving around this historical relic.
