Primary schools battle plastic waste in recycling competition with $20,000 up for grabs in prizes

The competition invites students to devise and demonstrate innovative ways to repurpose plastic bottles.

Primary school students across Australia are gearing up for the “Circular Champions” national competition, set to inspire the next generation on the benefits of recycling and creative reuse of plastic bottles. The initiative, launched by the team behind the Aussie of the Month program, coincides with its twentieth anniversary, signalling a renewed focus on nurturing environmental mindfulness among young Australians.

Kicking off today, 22 July, the competition challenges students to devise and demonstrate innovative ways to repurpose plastic bottles. This practical approach to recycling aims not only to reduce waste but also to embed fundamental values such as teamwork, community contribution, and environmental responsibility.

At stake are classroom stationery prize packs valued at a total of $20,000, generously provided by Pilot Pen Australia. Participating schools stand a chance to win an assortment of educational supplies, including gel pens, whiteboard markers, ballpoint pens, refillable stations, erasable highlighters, and safety dispensers for Sellotape.

“This is an exciting opportunity for children to think creatively about reusing materials and to contribute positively to their community,” shared Amar Singh, the 2023 Australia’s Local Hero and an ambassador for the Aussie of the Month program. His organisation, Turbans 4 Australia, is known for its extensive work in aiding Australians facing financial distress while promoting multiculturalism and religious tolerance.

Jarrad Murray, head of marketing at Pilot Pen Australia, shared his company’s excitement for the partnership. “Celebrating our 20-year partnership with the Aussie of the Month program, we are thrilled to support this initiative encouraging young minds to engage in sustainable practices,” said Murray. This competition aligns with Pilot Pen’s ongoing efforts to encourage the use of refillable writing instruments, thereby supporting the circular economy.

The Aussie of the Month program is widely respected for its role in recognising student achievements that demonstrate core Australian values such as fairness, respect, and inclusion. Piloted by the National Australia Day Council and supported by the Department of Home Affairs, the program provides monthly recognition to students who actively contribute to their communities.

Mark Fraser, CEO of the National Australia Day Council, also commented on the importance of the Circular Champions initiative. “We are delighted to support this initiative fostering environmental stewardship among young Australians. Our partnership with Pilot Pen Australia and their generous contribution of prizes underline the collaborative effort towards a sustainable future,” Fraser stated.

The competition invites entries from primary schools until 20 September 2024. Interested schools can register and submit their students’ projects online at the official Aussie of the Month website.
