Prime Minister nominates Finance Minister to lead OECD

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann will be Australia’s candidate for the role of Secretary General of the OECD.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced the Federal Government’s intention to nominate Finance Minister, Mathias Cormann as Australia’s candidate for the role of Secretary General of the OECD.

“The OECD needs the sort of leadership that we think Australia and an Australian can provide,” Mr Morrison says.

Mr Morrison says that Minister Cormann’s seven year experience as the longest serving Australian Finance Minister makes him perfectly equipped for the role.

Minister Cormann will formally retire from his role as Finance Minister at the end of October, where the federal government will move immediately to formally nominate him for that role.

With Cormann’s resignation, the Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Simon Birmingham will be appointed the new Leader of the Government in the Senate and sworn in as the Minister for Finance.

Senator Michaelia Cash will be appointed the new Deputy Leader of the Government and Senate.
