Prohibition Liquor Co. Now Slinging Hand Sanitisers Alongside Their Gin

The hand sanitiser will be packaged in the beautiful, reusable glass bottles that Prohibition is renowned for.

The owners of Prohibition Liquor Co took matters into their own hands this week when they could not buy hand sanitiser to protect their patrons and staff.

“We searched everywhere for hand sanitiser and like everyone else, we simply couldn’t find it,” says Prohibition co-founder and graphic designer Adam Carpenter.

“I couldn’t sleep over the weekend thinking about all of this and just got up and researched the project and designed our own product.”

Adam says that initially, the plan was to keep the hand sanitiser for in-house use.

“But if we were going to do it, we thought might as well make a few more for the broader Prohibition family,” he says.

“We are not in the hand sanitiser business at all and don’t plan to be, but we do have a lot of alcohol on hand, (the key ingredient in sanitiser) and we know how to make and package a good product.”

Wes Heddles, who founded the liquor company with Adam in 2015, says being a small business makes Prohibition nimble.

“When Adam suggested the project and we thought through the fact that this is one small thing we can do to help in this type of crisis, we were all on board,” Wes says.

The hand sanitiser will be packaged in the beautiful, reusable glass bottles that Prohibition is renowned for.

Wes says only a limited number of bottles could be made so demand has to be controlled to avoid a stampede.

“So, if you come in to buy a full-sized bottle of Prohibition Gin, we give you a bottle of PLC Sanitiser,” he says.

Prohibition’s head distiller Hugh Lumsden says the sanitiser is made primarily from the ‘tails’ or leftover spirits from the distilling process.

“The botanicals of the gin are definitely present, but with hydrogen peroxide and glycerine added, it’s not a product for consumption,” Hugh says.
