The Public Housing Improvement Program is hitting a major milestone, with construction now underway on the final site in Seaton, which will feature three new two-bedroom, single-story homes.
Across South Australia, 282 homes are currently being built as part of the program. This includes 50 new apartments being constructed on Tucker Street in Adelaide’s CBD. Once finished, these homes will fulfill the government’s promise to improve public housing.
So far, 158 homes have been completed, with new tenants moving in or current tenants relocating from homes being redeveloped. The homes being built range from two to four bedrooms and are spread across several suburbs in metropolitan areas, as well as seven regional locations. This effort is part of a $232.7 million investment in public housing, including the PHIP and other Housing Trust projects.
Construction began on the first PHIP homes in late 2022, and the first homes were completed in 2023. The program is part of a broader plan by the State Government to tackle SA’s housing crisis. Along with building new homes, the Housing Trust is upgrading 350 vacant houses and improving amenities for 3,000 homes already in use.
“The average age of a Housing Trust property is 44 years old so we are embarking upon major urban renewal projects in places like Seaton, Woodville and Blair Athol, to transform old, poor quality public housing into new communities with modern Housing Trust properties,” Minister for Housing and Urban Development Nick Champion said.
“These homes provide sanctuary and security for the most vulnerable families in our community.”
