The Queen’s Baton Is Bound For South Australia

The spirit of the Commonwealth Games will well and truly be felt in Adelaide, with The Queen’s Baton heading to South Australia on Sunday 18 February. So get your viewing spots organised, as this will be a historical moment you will not want to miss.

On a long journey spanning more than a year, thousands of people from across the Commonwealth take turns to run the Queen’s Baton Relay. Delivering a message from Her Majesty the Queen, the relay’s final destination is the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. To mark its arrival into Adelaide, the city is hosting a free event allowing the public to cheer on the batonbearers for the Adelaide leg of the Relay.

Here are the details on the baton’s busy schedule:

Arriving in Victoria Square at 4:45pm, the baton will begin its journey through the city at 5pm, weaving through Rundle Mall and along North Terrace before reaching Montefiore Hill. It will then end at Elder Park before community celebrations commence at the Southern Plaza of Adelaide Oval where it will arrive at 6:30pm and the event will conclude at 8pm.

There will be live music from Antipodean Rock Collective (members of PowderfingerSpiderbaitJet and You Am I) and local rock band Runaway Weekend. Along with sweet tunes, there will be free face painting and jumping castles, photo booths, table tennis provided by Table Tennis SA, a giant bubble shows and many local food trucks.

Following on from this, the Batton will head to Coffin Bay, Port Lincoln on February 19. On February 20, the baton will head to Penneshaw and Kingscote; and finally, on February 21, the baton will see Aldinga, Hahndorf, Lobethal and Stirling.

Marking 60 years since a baton was first used to carry the Monarch’s message from Buckingham Palace to the Games, this is a wonderful chance to head on down and watch as some more history is made!
