Queenslander Amy Robson has been recognised as South Australia’s most stylish racegoer, taking out the coveted Fashion at The Races title at Centrebet South Australian Derby Day, Morphettville Racecourse.

Up against 14 other Finalists, Amy’s Autumn-inspired outfit proved a favourite with the judges, sending her into the history books as the first overall winner of the competition and earning her the keys to the major prize – a Volkswagen Polo.

“I can’t believe it. My Dad lives in Perth and we don’t see each other very often so we decided to meet up in Adelaide this weekend. And now look what’s happened!” Amy said.

“My grandmother made this outfit from scratch. She was here a few weeks ago and was inspired by all the Autumn colours so that’s where the idea came from.”

Over 30 racegoers lined up at Morphettville on Saturday afternoon for their last chance to enter Fashion at The Races. Brisbane local Amy entered in the final hour and was chosen as the SA Derby Day Finalist, securing her a place in the afternoon’s State Final.

The remaining 14 finalists were selected at local Fashions on the Field competitions at 25 race meetings across South Australia over the past year.

The Advertiser Fashion Editor, SA Weekend columnist and judge, Anna Vlach, said Amy was a standout.

“Amy’s outfit was vintage inspired with a modern edge. She really owned it,” Anna said.

Coming in a close second was Kangaroo Island Cup Finalist Alex Hecker, whose navy lace dress won her a $3000 Liza Emanuele shopping experience. Also recognised was Mount Gambier Regional Finalist Tahlia Gabrielli, whose qualifying outfit won her the Adelaide Now People’s Choice award following an online voting poll in the two weeks prior to SA Derby Day.

“Alex was poised and I loved the unexpected combination of navy and camel,” Anna said.

“Tahlia was also great today. She was immaculately groomed, had beautiful poise and she knew that red ones go faster!”

Both on and off the track, this year’s SA Derby Day celebrations were bigger than ever before. Leon Corstens-trained Zabeelionaire took out the Group 1 $500,000 SA Derby, ridden by Damien Oliver.

Celebrations continued throughout the afternoon in the SAFM Diamond Lounge with a Liza Emanuele race wear fashion parade.

The 2012/2013 Fashion at The Races season began yesterday (May 6) at the Scott Group of Companies Millicent Cup at Penola Racecourse. SAFM’s Hayley Pearson has been named as this year’s Fashion at The Races Ambassador and the major prizes have just been announced.

The winner of the 2012/2013 Fashion at The Races title, to be held on South Australian Oaks Day at Morphettville Racecourse next year, will drive away in a Mini Ray and the Runner-Up will receive a $3000 wardrobe from new fashion partner Perri Cutten.

Entrants must be 18 or over and are judged on appropriateness of the outfit for the particular event, originality and confidence, attention to detail with accessories, appreciation of current fashion trends, grooming and deportment.
