RAA members and other South Australian drivers can now reserve a range vehicles by the hour or the day – including SUVs, people movers and utes – by using their smartphones or the Flexicar website to book and unlock the vehicles.

RAA Senior Manager Future Mobility, Mark Borlace, expects Flexicar to be well received in Adelaide following its success interstate and the imminent departure from SA of car share service GoGet.

He expects Flexicar will be particularly popular with people who do not have a car and need one occasionally for a weekend getaway or a short business trip.

“But we also believe it will be useful for car owners who need a second vehicle from time to time,” Mr Borlace said.

“RAA recognises that as people’s mobility requirements and preferences change, we need to adapt and provide a larger range of services which meet the flexible mobility solutions motorists are looking for.’’

Eoin MacNeill, Vice President, Hertz Asia Pacific, said: “Flexicar has successfully operated in the Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth for a number of years and we are excited to expand into South Australia.

“We are pleased to enter this arrangement with a trusted motoring organisation such as RAA and are confident it will be a great success as Flexicar is an affordable, convenient and easy travel alternative to public transport around the city or for short breaks out of town.”

Using the Flexicar website or App, available from the Apple App Store or Google Play, motorists have 24/7 access to seven vehicles located in designated parking bays in Bowden, Glenelg, Tonsley and at RAA in Mile End from today.

Another 13 vehicles will be added to the Adelaide CBD from April 19. All vehicles will be located in designated parking spots on streets and in car parks. Flexicars are to be returned to the same spot at the end of the trip.

Flexicar’s competitive pricing is simple and transparent. Vehicles are available at a flat rate starting from $8.50 per hour, which includes unlimited kilometres with hourly bookings, petrol, insurance and 24/7 roadside assistance, with RAA members entitled to a 10 per cent discount. The Flexicar annual membership fee of up to $49 is also waived for RAA members.

Flexicar vehicles are cleaned regularly and hard surfaces such as steering wheels are disinfected. Wipes and hand sanitisers will be placed in cars and customers are urged to follow SA Government COVID-19 restrictions when using the service.

RAA has experience in the car sharing sector, having previously partnered General Motors to provide the Maven service which terminated following the withdrawal of the car manufacturing firm from Australia.
