The RAA has released data highlighting the effects of the bp Grand Final road closures on traffic throughout Adelaide, sharing specific routes that have experienced considerable delays. With the Adelaide Grand Final road closures ongoing until December 4th, understanding these impacts is crucial for drivers navigating the city.
One of the most heavily affected routes is The Parade in Norwood, stretching from Portrush Road to Fullarton Road, where the median travel time during Monday morning’s peak soared to approximately 29 minutes from a usual four minutes.
Similarly, Fullarton Road, between Greenhill Road and The Parade, reported a dramatic increase in travel times from nine minutes to 24 minutes. Other increases included Payneham Road/North Terrace, which rose from 17 minutes to 29 minutes, and Greenhill Road from Devereux Road to Fullarton Road, which doubled from nine minutes to 20 minutes.
Charles Mountain, RAA Senior Manager for Safety and Infrastructure, shared, “Road closures for the Adelaide Grand Final are in place until 4 December, so if you’re travelling near the east of the CBD before then, have a plan or leave extra time.”
To assist motorists in avoiding these increases, traffic monitoring tools such as the Traffic SA website, Addinsight App, and Google Maps are recommended. These platforms can provide real-time updates on traffic conditions, allowing drivers to make informed decisions about their routes.
Charles recommended considering alternative transport options. “O-Bahn bus services are another great option as they’re virtually separated from motor vehicle traffic until reaching Grenfell Street. Or switch to transport modes like cycling, which bypasses the congestion, and can often be quicker during the morning peak.”
Pedestrian and cyclist paths have also been disrupted. The closure of the Victoria Park/Pakapakanthi (Park 16) path will continue until late 2025, and riders and walkers are advised to look for detour signs.
