RAAF P-8A Poseidon To Do Low Flypast Over Adelaide City Today

A low-level pass over the City by a Royal Australian Airforce (RAAF) aircraft will be one of the highlights of a military march through the City later today (Monday 30 October).

A low-level pass over the City by a Royal Australian Airforce (RAAF) aircraft will be one of the highlights of a military march through the City later today (Monday 30 October).

The City of Adelaide will grant members of the No. 24 City of Adelaide Squadron (24SQN) “Freedom of Entry” in a special ceremony to be held on King William Street outside Town Hall.

Accompanied by the Air Force Band, up to 100 Defence Force members will take part in the event. A P-8A Poseidon aircraft is due to conduct a single flypast above King William Street at low level at approximately 2.10pm (note that this is subject to change due to operational requirements and weather).

Originally formed in June 1940 as an operational squadron, 24SQN’s role has now evolved to provide fixed base combat support to flying units stationed at RAAF Base Edinburgh.

Lord Mayor Martin Haese says Freedom of Entry originates from a custom first observed in the 17th century by British regiments in seeking permission to march through the City of London.

“It is a ceremony symbolises the close association between a military unit and the city where it is based.”

The Lord Mayor has urged city workers, visitors and residents to view the parade and show their support for the Squadron’s members.
