Adelaide’s recent cold snap has led to an unusually high number of car battery replacements, as RAA Road Service sees its busiest Monday since 2019. On what was a particularly cold Monday at the start of this week, RAA patrols replaced a staggering 333 car batteries in the metropolitan area, a figure that significantly surpasses the daily average of 152 batteries.
Mark Borlace, RAA mobility expert, explained, “Temperature extremes like the cold mornings we’ve had this week often lead to a spike in battery failures. The fact this cold snap has come after our long, warm summer would also have made the impact more significant.
“Many batteries may seem fine in warm weather but if they’re a bit older or weaker, they might not be strong enough to cope with a big drop in temperature, where the chemical reactions slow down significantly.”
Mark recommends that if you’ve got a car with an older battery sitting in the garage this week, check that it’s still starting before you need to go somewhere urgently.
“Most batteries will last about three years so if you’ve had yours a while and it’s starting to sound sluggish, consider replacing it,” he said.
“Double-check your RAA Road Service membership is up-to-date so you can book a battery replacement with us if needed.”
The most battery failures occurred in the suburbs of Parafield Gardens, Morphett Vale, Prospect, and Happy Valley. Luckily, RAA members could easily book a battery replacement service by calling directly, using the RAA app, or through the organisation’s website.
As one of South Australia’s largest and oldest organisations, RAA prioritises its members by continuously seeking new ways to help. Since its establishment in 1903 by a group of motoring enthusiasts, RAA has grown to serve over 820,000 members. The organisation remains dedicated to offering reliable services and products in the motor, home, and travel sectors.
