RAH Orthopaedics Department ranked number one in Australia

A survey of thousands of medical experts from 20 countries ranked the RAH’s Orthopaedic Department number 22 in the world.

The Royal Adelaide Hospital’s (RAH) Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma has been ranked the best orthopaedic clinic in Australia and among the top clinics in the world.

Central Adelaide Local Health Network CEO, Lesley Dwyer, said a survey of thousands of medical experts from 20 countries ranked the RAH’s Orthopaedic Department number 22 in the world.

“CALHN provides world-class care to South Australians and this is a fantastic international recognition of the treatment the RAH offers to our community,” said Dwyer.

“To be named the number one Orthopaedic Department in Australia, and one of the best in the world, is acknowledgement of dedicated work over decades by doctors, nurses, researchers, allied health and support staff within the Department, as well as colleagues at the University of Adelaide. I’m incredibly proud of the whole team.”

The RAH orthopaedic department specialises in complex joint reconstruction and joint replacement, major trauma, spinal injuries, as well as a wide range of orthopaedic subspecialties. The clinic treats an average of 4,000-5,000 patients each year.

CALHN’s Head of Orthopaedics and Trauma, Professor Bogdan Solomon, said the Department is listed among world renowned hospitals, including the Hospital for Special Surgery, in New York, and Charite, Berlin.

“Our team is very pleased to receive such recognition alongside world-leading orthopaedic departments,” said Professor Bogdan.

“Critical to our success has been the integration of the department with the Discipline of Orthopaedics and Trauma at the University of Adelaide, with academic surgeons and scientists across the Hospital and University ensuring clinical orthopaedics is inseparable from research, teaching and quality improvement.”

The ranking was awarded the American independent magazine Newsweek.
