With relaxation at the forefront of your itinerary, you will be guided around and through the history of Kingsford The Barossa’s 225-acre estate, featuring the stunning two-storey, 168-year-old, Georgian-style sandstone homestead that’s anchored within South Australia’s pioneering, pastoral and entertainment history.
Kingsford The Barossa’s fusion of character-laced heritage and contemporary innovations is inextricably intertwined, resulting in a sublimely rich, comfortable, relaxing, and exciting experience. This ability to successfully deliver two contrasting attributes, tradition and innovation, in one experience binds Kingsford the Barossa with Penfold’s exceptional portfolio.
Once your senses have been revived from your estate tour and your palates elevated to another plane after your private Penfold Icons tasting experience, you’ll ascend further into a culinary utopia with Orleana Restaurant’s curated four-course dining menu matched with Penfold’s wines.
Amid Orleana Restaurant’s decadent dedication to Penfolds, you’ll enjoy a cheeky pairing of the Grange with a meat pie (unlike any other meat pie you’ll ever taste), a homage to Max Schubert’s love of this classic Australian meal.
Wine lovers worldwide have a lot to be thankful to Max for beyond the Grange. He was also the mastermind behind Penfolds’ Bin wines. It was while Max was perfecting his first experimental Grange in 1951, wanting to keep it a secret, that he generated the generic storage identification ‘Bin 1’, which indicated the type, style, and location of the wine but nothing more.
This efficient storage system soon became a distinctive Penfold’s labelling tradition when, in 1959, Max created a Shiraz using grapes from their Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard, double-dipping on its Bin 28 storage name by using it as its label name, thus making it the inaugural wine marketed under the Bin category, now a trademark Penfolds tradition.
Fast-forward 12 years and leapfrog over a few hundred bins to reach Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon. This sublime Cabernet Sauvignon has entered its 60th year as the first commercial release of a single Cabernet-based wine. Throughout the decades, it has consistently set the benchmark for Australian Cabernet Sauvignon while also showcasing Penfolds’ House Style of multi-vineyard, multi-region, richly flavoured fruit-sourced wines that retain their full-bodied, consummate Cabernet qualities and reliably impressive cellaring potential.
With Penfold’s Grange dominating industry headlines for well over 70 years, their 180th birthday is a reminder of the enormous success they’d garnered over 100 years before Penfolds’ former Chief winemaker, Max Schubert AM’s bold attempt to realise his goal of creating the Grange, a wine that could be cellared for at least twenty years and still be considered a superlative sip upon its first gasp of oxygen.
It was in 1844 that established winemakers Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold sailed into South Australia with their four-year-old daughter Georgina and sufficient grapevine cuttings of French grenache to establish a vineyard on their 500-acre property in the district of Magill, upon which their new home, Grange Cottage, already stood, along with the required buildings and crops to establish a livelihood.
Pioneers from the get-go, this entrepreneurial couple set about making a living. Dr Chris pursued his medical ambitions while Mary and her assistants planted the Grenache cuttings, developing their range over the years with other acclimatised varieties grown within and for the local soils and climate.
Over the next couple of decades, Mary developed Penfolds’ vineyards to the point where she was exporting wines and winning international prizes while remaining at the forefront of winemaking innovation. She ensured the quality and longevity of the wines and Penfolds’ winery through her diligent succession planning, which has resulted in an ongoing custodianship steeped in loyalty and pride.
This legacy continues with today’s winemaking team, which has over 200 years of experience as Penfolds winemakers between them. Headed up by Chief Winemaker Peter Gago AC since 2002, they’ve kept the spirit of blending tradition with innovation alive, honouring the past while remaining at the Vanguard of the Australian wine industry.
While you can step into the Icons of Penfold experience as a day guest, to truly augment your relaxation and enjoyment, we recommend you book a night in Kingsford The Barossa’s contemporary Valley View suites or embrace the pioneering era within their vintage homestead.
