Rare 50-Year vertical of Redman Cabernet Sauvignon goes to auction

A unique opportunity has come up to bid on a 50-year complete vertical of Redman Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra, spanning every vintage from 1971 to 2021.

The prestigious Redman family from Coonawarra is set to auction an exclusive 50-year complete vertical of its Cabernet Sauvignon through Langton’s. This extraordinary auction, closing on August 18, 2024, presents a unique opportunity for wine collectors and enthusiasts to acquire a continuous sequence of bottles from every vintage from 1971 to 2021, each meticulously stored at the family’s winery.

Auction participants can also bid on several notable Redman magnums and an imperial from specific years. Available for auction are the 1971 1.5L Magnum Redman Cabernet, the 1976 1.5L Redman Cabernet Magnum, and the 2012 1.5L Redman Cabernet Magnum, as well as a 2004 6L Imperial.

The Redman family, rooted deeply in Coonawarra since 1908, has long been recognised for its medium-bodied, intensely flavoured Cabernet Sauvignons. However, it was Owen Redman, in the late 1960s, who recognised the potential for crafting exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, leading to their first release in 1970.

In celebration of reaching the half-century landmark, the Redman family hosted an exclusive event in 2023 that featured the complete Cabernet Sauvignon collection dating back to that first 1970 vintage. Dan Redman, a fourth-generation winemaker, highlights the significance of their collection. “It is a rare opportunity to see how the wines have evolved, showcasing winemaking styles during different climates, and celebrate how beautifully Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon can age,” he said.

Langton’s Head of Auctions and Secondary Market, Michael Anderson, reflects on the rarity and significance of this event. “This rare collection from the Redman family presents a glimpse into the history of Coonawarra. We don’t see many 50 consecutive-year verticals like this; it’s something special,” he commented.

Each vintage has been documented with winemaking notes, providing unique insights into the climatic conditions and viticultural practices over the decades.

For those keen to explore more about the Redman family’s winemaking journey, personal tales and stories are shared on the Redman YouTube channel, where Dan Redman offers personal insights about this exclusive Cabernet Sauvignon vertical.
