This July, you’ll have a chance to witness some pretty awe-inspiring abilities from the Giant Australian Cuttlefish as they transform their appearance right before your eyes at CuttleFest. Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries’ (EMS) annual winter festival invites visitors to dive into a world of marine activity and watch these creatures in their natural setting. The event runs from July 5th to 20th at Stony Point, just a half-hour south of Whyalla.

The Giant Australian Cuttlefish are known for their ability to instantly change colours, adapt their skin texture, and even reshape their bodies. These abilities will be on full display in a rare natural spectacle in the Upper Spencer Gulf. This location is the only place in the world where a large number of these cephalopods gather in one spot, attracting tens of thousands each season. The spectacle has gained international attention, even being featured in David Attenborough’s ‘Blue Planet’.
The assemblage of these cuttlefish brings enthusiasts and nature lovers from across the world to witness their unique features, such as blue blood, three hearts, and multiple limbs. Despite concerns over harmful algal blooms affecting parts of South Australia, the Upper Spencer Gulf remains unaffected, with pristine conditions for cuttlefish observation. Because of this, it is estimated that the population will likely remain strong until mid-August.

EMS is a leading not-for-profit community snorkelling organisation that provides a remarkable and educational experience for all participants. With professional guidance, the tours offer immersive interactions with these marine wonders. Participants are equipped with full winter wetsuits, professional-grade snorkelling gear, and receive educational insights from PADI-qualified leaders and marine biologists.
The tours focus on observing these fascinating marine animals and understanding their behaviours and the ecosystems they inhabit. This intimate setup makes it possible for every participant, regardless of their experience level, to enjoy and learn from this unique natural phenomenon.

EMS handles all aspects of the snorkelling adventure. Everything from suits, fins, snorkels, and masks to insightful guidance on marine life is provided. Participants only need to book their spot and show up ready for an adventure.
This year’s CuttleFest is a collaborative effort involving the City of Whyalla, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, and EMS.
